Thin plastics are thrown anywhere and everywhere causing the following environmental degradations and health problems:
-
It blocks the open sewage system and results in stagnation of sewage paving way for the breeding of mosquitoes which leads to the spread of various diseases
-
Plastic dumped on the soil prevents water percolation into the water table
-
It affects the very structure of soil
-
Water stagnating on the plastics strewn on the land becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria, which in turn produce diseases
-
Jellyfish-eating Fishes mistaking the plastic floating in the water for Jellyfish eat them and then die. As a result their species is becoming extinct.
-
Cattle eat plastic and die as a result of it.
-
Burning of plastics results in releasing of toxins in the atmosphere which in turn cause dreaded diseases like Cancer
-
Plastic is non bio degradable and so the problems become perennial
The maximum damage is done by plastic carry bags. Shops delivering goods in plastic bags and the people who insist on having plastic carry bags when they buy goods are responsible for plastic carry bag pollution.
Exnora has very novel exercise for people to pre vent this from happening. It is called “P3/M3”. P3 represents Plastic Pollution Prevention and M3 represents Minimum use of plastic, Maximum use of plastics (using those plastic bags some how reaching your home) and Mandatory safe disposal/recycling (how to go about safe disposal is dealt under Clean Home/ Source Solid Waste Management/ Hazardous waste).
In order to motivate the people to resist shops delivering goods in plastic carry bags in their shop, Exnora devised a novel certification of shops by giving a “Exnora Environmental Star” for shops who don’t sell and deliver the goods in plastic carry bags. Exnora Innovators Clubs will identify such shops and present them the star shaped Exnora Environmental Star board with inscription ‘Exnora Enviro-Star”. Environment conscious people should opt to buy goods from shops where Exnora Enviro-Star board is displayed and where they don’t deliver goods in plastic carry bags. They should convince the shops where they usually buy from to deliver goods in recycled paper bags. If you are environment conscious, you should carry a jute / cloth bag with you whenever you go shopping. Spirited Exnora Volunteers should go to schools and tell students of these arrangements and impress students to select only the shops where the star shaped ‘Exnora Enviro- Star’ board is displayed.
